Screening Invitation

To all Parents/Guardians/Grandparents/Caregivers of Preschoolers in Tewksbury,

Tewksbury Public Schools conducts screening for three- and four-year old children. Such screening is designed to review a child’s development and to assist in identification of those children who should be referred for an evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services.

Participation in the screening program for three- and four-year olds is optional on the part of the parents. Three- and four-year olds are identified for screening through several means:
• Responses of parents to child development survey sent to parents of all three- and four-year olds during the month of the child’s birthday
• Phone requests for information/screening/evaluation directed to Special Education Coordinator: Preschool, Private School and Summer
• Requests for information from agencies and preschools working with preschoolers in Tewksbury
• Requests for screening from Early Childhood Specialists in the Tewksbury Integrated Preschool

Three- and four-year olds are screened monthly at the Center School using the DIAL-3 screening measurement. The screening team is comprised of an Early Childhood Specialist, Speech Language Pathologist, Certified Aide and School Nurse. The team is coordinated by the Special Education Coordinator. At the screening, parents receive brochures and information about child development and have opportunities to speak with specialists in child development regarding any concerns they may have about their child’s development.

Parents receive both phone and written invitation to the screening. After screening, parents receive written summary of their child’s performance. If a referral is being made for further evaluation Consent for Evaluation, Proposal Letter and Notice of Procedural Safeguards is sent to the parents within five days of the screening date.
