North Street PAC

March 5, 2009 Meeting Minutes

Welcome/Introductions:

The Co-chair Ellen Roane kicked off the meeting.  

 

Co-Chair Comments:

(1)   Pennies for Patients:  We raised over $500!  Thanks to all who participated.

(2)   Talent Show: Sharon Adelman is heading up this event.  This Variety show type event is to be held on April 3rd, from 6-8:30pm.   We will have over 50 students participating with acts ranging from 2-5 min.  Tickets will be $4 each.  There will be a family cap of $10 or $12.  Volunteers are needed!  (We will be showcasing students’ artwork from our After School Arts  & Enrichment program.)

(3)   Family Reading Night/Read-A-Thon:  This event ends on Monday (3/9th), and all students’ sponsor checks are due at that time.  Certificates will be handed out at Family Reading Night (3/13).    On April 17th, an All School meeting will beheld to discuss results!

(4)   Roller Skating:  We will be hosting a Family Roller Skating Night on Sunday, April 19th between 5:30-7:30pm at the Tyngsboro Roller Kingdom complex.  The entrance fee will be $3 per person.  There will be a family cap of $12 per family.  Flyers to be distributed soon.

(5)   Playground:  We are still looking to do landscaping work for the playground area. 

a.      Any landscaping that needs to be done, must be 88 compliant (i.e. wood chips, etc.)  Jim Sharkey (town business manager) needs to be contacted for this project. 

b.      The baseball fields also need to be improved.  Co-chairs to look into whether any money is available from the town Baseball Association to improve benches, etc.

c.      We really could use a canopy (with picnic tables) to provide shade/rest area for the extended day children. 

 

Treasurers’ update/remarks:

Ann Flynn reported in:

1.      Ann was given the “go ahead” to submit our application for non-profit organization status.

2.      Miss Kimbal mentioned the fact that we were given $600 to open/start a Scholarship Fund at North Street.  The money would be used towards funding student access to field trips, A&E program , etc for students who would like to participate but can not afford the tuition fee.  Dave Libby needs to set up a specific account/number for this.  Lori to place an “agenda item” for this on the next School Committee meeting agenda.

 

 

 

Fundraising:

1.      Square One Art:  “families” theme artwork is on target to be completed by March 13th and delivered April 24th. 

2.      Juice Bags: (see “Teachers” comments below))

3.      Recycling:  This month North Street plans a school wide assembly to kick off program & to help students understand our recycling efforts (3/12).  Paper Retriever will be highlighted.  We also collected $25.30 from our bottle and can collection!

 

Team/Committee Reports:

(1)   4th Grade:  A lot of work has been done for the yearbook.  On 3/10, a panoramic picture of the class will be taken.  Due date of 4/10 to have everything turned in for the yearbook.

 

(2)   Arts & Enrichment: 

a.    Lowell Devils Family Night: Everyone voted and we passed hosting another Lowell Devils Family on 4/24.  Flyers to go out soon.

b.    Lowell Spinners Field Trip:   Ellen to follow up and choose a day for this easy fundraiser.  Current date choices are between 6/22-6/26).

c.    After School Arts & Enrichment Program:  Program started this week.  91 out of 110 spots were filled!  A total of 9 programs were offered. So far, great feedback has been received.  Upon program completion, a survey will be taken.  Hoping to have extra money (profit) to place toward the scholarship fund.

d.    Michael Glaser: First grade to have a “Marine Life” presentation on 3/13.

e.    Natural Discoveries: On 3/16, the Kindergartners will be presented to.

 

Teachers’ Update:

Mrs. Enos is our teacher representative to the PAC. 

  1. North Street will begin to collect juice bags for $. 

(Capri Sun =$.02, Kool Aid =$.01)

 

Principal’s Comments/Remarks:

(1)    Miss Kimball re-iterated that the ITBS and MCAS testing will be beginning shortly. 

(2)    School Committee is researching a “Character” program. 

 

 

SPED PAC Updates:

(1)   Kelly Preble is SPED PAC’s Treasurer and is once more our SPED PAC representative.

(2)   The next SPED PAC meeting is a “Basic Rights Workshop” and will take place on March 16th from 7:30-9pm at the John F. Ryan School library.

·        Reach for The Stars – Read-a-Thon underway.

·        March 13th Family reading Night.
