Dear Parents and Guardians
There has been much discussion in the media regarding the potential for a serious outbreak of the H1N1 flu as well as the typical, seasonal flu. The Tewksbury School Department and the Tewksbury Board of Health are working together to take the steps necessary to minimize the spread of H1N1 virus. I am writing to enlist your support in this effort.
In an effort to reduce the spreading of all communicable diseases, “bugs and viruses” please follow these guidelines:
1.Allow your child to remain at home if he/she has a fever. Your child should remain at home until he/she is fever free for 24 hours without the use of motrin/ibuprofen/Tylenol/acetaminophen or other similar medication
2.Please keep your child home from school after he/she has vomited, with or without a fever, for at least 24 hours. Your child should have a day of normal eating patterns before returning to school.
3.If your child is on an antibiotic, your child must complete a minimum of 24 hours of antibiotic therapy before returning to school. For some conditions the Massachusetts Department of Public Health may requires longer period of time for a full recovery.
4.Most importantly remind your child to wash his/ her hands. Frequent hand washing is the best way to minimize the spread of communicable diseases. Also please remind your child to cough into a tissue or his/her shirtsleeve.
We will provide you with future information about clinics for the H1N! vaccinations once we have this information. Please consult the mass.gov/flu or MDPH Flu Hotline website or the Tewksbury Public School web site tewksbury.k12.ma.us for further information. Your cooperation in this matter will assist us in providing a healthy and productive learning environment for all the children.
Sincerely,
Christine L. McGrath, PhD
Superintendent of Schools
